What Am I Doing Now?

I recently became aware of a relatively cool concept called the “Now” page. I see it on more and more websites. It’s simply a “what I’m doing now” page — a snapshot of what’s going on in that person’s world, be it in business or in life, or in both.

I even created one of my own.

Unlike an about page, which is more of a backgrounder on the business or the person behind it, a Now page shares what a person is focused on at this point in their life.

Unlike a mission statement, which is more of a promise (and can often appear contrived), a Now page doesn’t make any promises but shows what’s really important to that person through the lens of what they’re focusing on now.

And unlike social media, which is more of a sharing platform over which you have no control, the Now page provides a bigger picture in one single place.

Here’s why you, as a professional, should have one, too.

The creator of the movement, Derek Sivers, is an entrepreneur, thought leader, and the author of many books on personal character, values, and self-identity. He often talks about authenticity and trustworthiness, and the desire for people to connect with each other.

His Now page movement is a reflection of that desire to connect. It isn’t for marketing, attention, or business. Not directly, anyway. It’s simply useful because people want to know more about you.

There are many other “side” benefits, too. Like Sivers says, it’s also a good reminder of your priorities and goals. By publicly showing what you are focused on now, it helps you say no to other requests — and lets others understand why, too.

But I also believe it does more:

  • It humanizes your site and business.
  • It showcases your personal brand.
  • It increases your perceived value.
  • It inspires credibility and authenticity.
  • It makes you appear approachable.
  • It expresses your individuality.
  • It adds dimension to your authority.
  • It invites likeability and loyalty.
  • It even lowers buyer resistance.

Sivers shares a few tips on how to create one, but there are no set-in-stone rules. But to guide you, here’s what I did: I simply listed what I’m working on right now, what I’m looking for (and not looking for), and what I’m interested in lately.

Create your own “Now” page, and share it! Once you’re done, send me a message and let me see it. I’d love to see what you’re up to right now, too.
